John Terry under pressure to quit England captaincy

The recent accusations aimed at John Terry, regarding an extra marital affair with underwear model Vanessa Perroncel, the former girlfriend of England team-mate Wayne Bridge, has called into question his suitability as England captain.

As a role model on the field, few can match his determination and professionalism as well as his undoubted skill as a player, however as discussed by many, the requirements of an England captain, transcend the football field, and should the allegations be true, his reputation cannot fail to be tarnished.

Fabio Capello, as England coach, will determine whether John Terry retains the captaincy. Meetings held by Capello’s right-hand man, Franco Baldini, with four key FA board members, have agreed that Capello should make the decision. In light of Capello’s disciplinarian attitude, the decision cannot be an easy one.

With the World Cup a mere few months away, this is one distraction that many would like to have avoided. A quick resolution, may well be the answer, with many suggesting that the decision should be made prior to the Euro 2012 qualifying draw in Warsaw on Sunday. However, with Vanessa Perroncel discussing the situation under the tutelage of Max Clifford, further allegations are possible. This means in reality, that Capello may wait to see if any further developments arise, prior to making his decision.
